Hulk to Flesh Golem Mini Conversion

First, this is not a paint job. This is my Photoshop “sketch” of what I want the Flesh Golem miniature to look like. Flesh Golems are basically the fantasy role-playing version of Frankenstein. Whereas Franky was animated by chemistry or alchemy in the original book — it’s not made clear which — a Flesh Golem can be brought to life through the use of magic, alchemy, electricity or any combination of arcane and scientific methods. The result is an over-sized humanoid, the large size of the figure owing to the difficulty of connecting the “found” body parts.

The “golem” part of a Flesh Golem comes from Jewish mysticism. Even as late as the 18th century, Jewish alchemists and magicians believed that they could create a figure of clay and animate it, or give it life, buy inscribing a word in Hebrew on its forehead. Erasing one letter of the word would render the golem inanimate.

My Flesh Golem is based on a cheap Marvel Incredible Hulk mini that I found at a Dollar Tree store. The first step will be to wash any oil residue from the figure. Once it’s dry, I’ll use some two-part epoxy putty to build up the areas where the stitching will go. Just a little bit, though. I don’t need much. I just need enough depth of putty to add the stitches and the scars. When the putty has cured, I’ll add other details with more putty. For instance, I plan on putting either a leather or rope belt around his waist. When I’m satisfied with the base sculpt, I’ll paint the entire figure in a layer of flat black acrylic paint. That will form the primer layer on which I’ll paint the fleshtones and the darker brown of the pants. Unlike some of the other minis I’ve seen that have all the fleshtones the same, I’m working on the assumption that my Dr. Frankenstein has taken parts from a variety of races and species, including orcs (which get me back to green skin, in some cases).

As you can see, my inspiration is coming from several of the commercial minis out there (L-R Wizards of the Coast, Reaper & Ral Partha) but none of them has quite the same collection of random parts that mine will. He’ll be a true amalgamation; a patchwork quilt of disparate flesh.

More to come, so stay tuned!
